Aril Estate is just over 3 hours drive from Sydney. It was founded in 2005 on a sheep grazing property. It wasn’t until 2007 when the first trial planting of 200 pomegranates occurred. In the summer of 2007-2008 our first order of 1500 olive trees were planted. We now have approximately 525 each of Manzanilla and Californian queens, 750 Picual and 200 SA Verdale under irrigation. We now have eight pomegranate varieties totalling 3500 trees.
Aril Estate follows sustainable agriculture and production practices. Although not organic certified we endeavour to use sprays that don’t harm the environment. We use pyrethrum spray in summer and organic white oil in winter to minimise problematic insects like black scale and olive lace bug.
We invested in dorper sheep to mow the lawns and keep the grass down around the base of trees. Dorper sheep don’t need to be shorn as they shed their wool. However, they do shed wool everywhere. Unfortunately, we don’t place sheep in with the pomegranates in summer, as they like to eat the trees and fruit. Additionally, sheep have to me supervised to keep them off the trees when they are in the olive grove.
At Aril Estate we specialise in table olive, oil, fresh pomegranates and syrups. In the near future we plan to sell pomegranate wine. On a smaller scale we plant fresh garlic and produce apricot and plum jams.
In 2016, we started construction on the factory shed to house our olive oil press and pomegranate juicing and storage facilities. We have an onsite shop stocked with our products. We offer free tasting and happily answer your questions to the best of our abilities.
